BRIEF BACKGROUND SUMMARY:
Born in Sweden in 860, Anya, then called Aud lived somewhat separately from her village with her boyfriend Olaf. When Olaf drunkenly slept with another woman the furious Aud cursed him, turning him into a troll. This act of vengeance drew the attention of D'Hoffryn, the leader of a clan of demons, who transformed her into an immortal vengeance demon who could wield the power of the wish. For over a thousand years Anyanka travelled the world, granting the wishes of scorned women (and also meeting such figures as Dracula and being present at the Russian Revolution)

In 1998 she appeared in Sunnydale, drawn by the pain of the recently cheated on Cordelia. She granted her wish that Buffy never came to Sunnydale and sent the whole town to an alternate hell like reality. However giles realised the truth and smashed her amulet, reversing the wish and rendering Anyanka mortal.

Now calling herself Anya, she struggled to fit in with her new human life. She fell in love with Xander and found herself as a semi member of the Scooby gang, despite a love/hate relationship with Willow. She discovered a love of capitalism and worked for Giles in the Magic Box. Eventually she and Xander got engaged.

Her past life as a vengeance demon came back to haunt her when a former victim deceived Xander into believing he was being shown the future of an abusive marriage with Anya. Even when the lie was revealed Xander's fear of turning into his father was so great he left Anya at the alter. Her pain was so great that D'Hoffryn once again granted her the power of the Wish. She also slept with Spike while drunk.

As a demon Anya has enhanced strength and durability (she has been seen to survive a sword through the chest, can hold her own in a fight with a Slayer and beat a vampire.) She can
teleport, use telekinesis and heal quickly. She also has a degree of psychic ability (such as sensing a woman's pain or the presence of a soul.) She has a limited magical ability and vast demonic knowledge.

She is blunt and tactless, more so than even Cordelia, to the point of making other characters uncomfortable. She doesn't understand much of human emotion or social interaction. She's terrified of bunnies.
